Joseph Juran has explained his model of quality improvement on the basis of the basis of three universal processes which have been popularly named a Juran Trilogy.

The processes are:

  • Quality Planning
  • Quality Control
  • Quality Improvement

Quality planning — the process for preparing to meet quality goals

  • Establish Quality Goals
  • Identify Who customers are
  • Determine the needs of the customers
  • Develop processes able to produce the product features
  • Develop product features that respond to customers needs
  • Establish process controls
  • transfer the plans to the operating forces

Quality control — the process for meeting quality goals during operations.

  • Evaluate actual performance
  • Compare actual performance with quality goals
  • Act on the difference

Quality improvement — the process for breaking through to unprecedented levels of performance.

  • Prove the need Establish the infrastructure
  • Identify the improvement projects
  • Establish project teams
  • Provide the teams with resources, training, and motivation to:
    • Diagnose the causes Stimulate remedies
    • Establish controls to hold the gains
